What's Patty up to?

    Patty's Blog

In fact, that's what everyone always tells me when I cook... It's like there's a football team coming over...

Well, two nights ago, it was more like there were TWO soccer teams coming over... I'm so used to cooking for my dad and husband and brothers (who eat everything in sight) that when I cooked for these beautiful ladies, I made waaaay too much food!

But when I cook, I cook, so I didn't take any pictures of the night, and I was waiting until someone that came over had mercy on me and posted some images right on my blog!  Thank you Inge, for doing that!  Please go over to Inge's blog and read all about that night, then come back here for the recipes!

I "stole" this image from Inge's blog so that at least you can see what you're getting the recipe for!

If you don't feel like reading, you can just download the recipes in a pdf form, right here!

    So, item #1 is

    Brazilian Black Beans (Feijoada)

    Igredients:

    4 cans of Black Beans

    1 Large Onion, diced

    4 cloves of garlic

    2 bay leaves

    1/2 lb of bacon

    Salt and pepper to taste

Thyme and Parsley (to taste, sorry Mimi, I'm not very good with measuring)

     Olive Oil

Open all cans of Black Beans and put them into a crockpot on High.  Fry the bacon until fully cooked, but not crispy, drain the fat and add it to the crockpot.  Add diced onion, garlic, olive oil and spices, and let it simmer on High for a few hours... At least 4 hours... Then set it to Low until your soccer team arrives!

    Item #2

Sausage and Veggies (there's no Brazilian name for this dish since I made it up!)

    Ingredients:

6 sausage links of your choice (I use Butcher's choice - Superstore - Mild Italian)

3 Kale leaves (I hate measuring!!!)

    4 carrots, finely diced

    1 Large Onion, diced

    4 stalks of Celery, diced

1 large can of diced tomatoes, blended.

    4 cloves of garlic, minced

Cut the sausages into slices so they look like small meatballs (or not, do whatever you want!), saute them in a little bit of olive oil, and add other veggies when the sausages are cooked (on the outside, at least...)

Saute the veggies for about 5 minutes until the onion is transparent, and add the can  of tomatoes.

Add the garlic last.  (I always say that if a recipe calls for 2 cloves of garlic, they really mean 4, and if it doesn't call for garlic at all, then they just assumed you knew!)

Let this simmer on low, till it's time to eat (dont' you just LOVE how precise I am?  Of course you'll check if the sausage is cooked, right?  So let's say about 30 minutes?)

    Item #3

    Tomato Salsa

I would say that you should leave this dish to be made when your guests arrive.  People love hanging out in the kitchen while you cook!  At least in my house they do...

    Ingredients:

6 Roma Tomatoes, finely diced (sometimes I use grape tomatoes cut in quarters)

    1 onion, finely diced

    Fresh cilantro leaves

    Red Wine Vinegar

    Olive Oil.

    1 clove of garlic

It's pretty self explanatory, isn't it?  Dice it, mix it and serve it!  I learned from Jamie Oliver that you should always salt the tomatoes and let them sit for about 20 minutes before you add the rest of the dressing.  To make the dressing I mix it all into a pestle and mortar (garlic, red wine vinegar and olive oil - yes, to taste!) and then just pour it in a few minutes before we sit down to eat!

    Item #4

    Rice

Go ahead and make your favorite white rice recipe!  I used basmati and added olive oil, garlic and salt, but go ahead and do whatever you want!

Most important is the order in which you serve the food:

    1. Rice

    2. Black beans over the rice

    3. Sausage slightly on the side

    4. Tomato salsa over everything.

Brazilians traditionally mix everything up once on the plate and then pour farofa over the whole thing... I didn't make farofa because I didn't want to freak you out... it's not for everyone.

Oh and I almost the caipirinhas! (Brazilian drink)

    Ingredients:

    1 Lime per person

    Sugar

    Ice

Cachaca (Sagatiba is the best Brazilian Rum you can find in North America)

Crush the limes well with whatever you have... I have a caipirinha stick that my dad made for me, so there.  Add sugar as you crush, then add the ice and Brazilian Rum (I have NO IDEA how much Rum I add, again, sorry Mimi)...  My husband usually leaves it at that. But I'm a really cheap drunk, so I add sprite to water it down a little.

So there, ladies, hope this helps and thank you for coming over this week and let's definitely do it again!

Oh, and here's the only shot I took: the place settings that we made... Yeah, Yoko, I crafted!  So go ahead and fall over!

I'll never forget the day when Kathleen and Justin hired me to do their wedding... For many reasons that will remain unknown to all of you who weren't there at the time... But also for the following reason:

It was raining cats and dogs that day and I had two consultations for July 25, 2009...  But Justin and Kathleen, along with their troops (mom and sister) snuck in before them and hired me on the spot... We had an immediate connection and passion... and the rest is history...

I am so blessed by the clients that I have.  I'm such a hopeless romantic that I believe everyone that chooses me, was meant to be. Was meant to come into my life and forever impact it, change it...

So last night, the three of us headed out towards Headingley because Kathleen wanted Blue Prairie Skies in her pictures.  She loves blue skies and she loves just how flat and vast everything is around here (did I tell you she's crazy???), unlike her previous home in Ontario, where it's all hilly... Hmmm...

We talked the whole way there, then we talked the whole way back about life, religion, love, passion, you name it!  I have a feeling that these two came into my life to stay (I have a knack for picking clients like that!).

Then on the way back I taught them a little Winnipeg lesson about the best sushi in town (Asahi) and we were all happy!

Enough talking now... Here are the images:

Before we look at these next few images, I need to tell you that I'm not the kind of photographer that likes to take you to places that you're uncomfortable with or that in no way, reflect who you are...

Having said that, we did go onto some train-tracks out of  town... Reason?  None really... They just looked pretty... Oh, and Kathleen's home town had a train running through it.

Just like any other town, I suppose...

How's this for Blue Prairie Skies, Kathleen?

And don't you just love Dandelion/Mosquito season?

Thank you Kathleen and Justin, for spending a nice summer evening with me. I can't wait to photograph your wedding!   You two are so in love, it's catchy... and I'm happy I got to see that and I'm happy that you had a nice relaxing evening enjoying each other, even though I was there the whole time! ;)

    See you guys again soon!

    Tapitty-tap tap!

Posted by: offthepage in Untagged  on

This, I warn you, is a personal post.  If you are a serious blog stalker and you were around here a year ago, you saw me wearing that HORRENDOUS blue frock (that's right girls, I said it!) for my tap recital last year when we performed ABBA's Waterloo!!!

Well, this year I had something to do with the costumes, so we had something a little better...  (I'm really just easing them into the fact that next year we'll be wearing short mini skirts!)

In any case, isn't this a wonderful group?  The gorgeous redhead in the middle is our teacher, Jody and she's fantastic at making us work hard all year long (seriously, if you think tap is for sissies, then you should join us, though at this point, you'd have to audition!!!)

Girls, I had a wonderful year getting to know you, and dance with you and complain with you and talk about Jody behind her back with you (jk, miss Jody, we LOVE you!!!)

Here's the superstars!  We're missing our headliner Lisa, who could not make it to picture day, but she's an important part of our team!

Thank you Brittany, for taking our picture, and thank you soooo much, Linda, for hosting the party after the last class.

And thank you Kickit Dance Studio (Robert and Lori) for being such an amazing studio and I'm happy to drive across the city 4 times a week to dance with you!

Matt & Amanda are one of those couples that make you want to be a wedding crasher...  Not in the way you saw in the movie, but in a way that you just HAVE to be there and see them say their vows, do their dance, say their speeches... and watch them mill about and love la-di-da all day!

Or maybe that's just me... I'm LOVE addict... That's why no matter how little sleep I get, or how many weekends I work, I love love LOVE my job!!

When we met the first time, it was over the phone and I just fell in love with Amanda...  But I had no idea that I'd fall in love with Matt too!  (no, not THAT way, silly), just a little couple crush and jealousy of how cute they are together and just how crazy in love they are... Let's just say  I never had to coach them to get closer, cuddle or kiss... It just happened.  All I had to do was meter, compose and shoot!

Thanks you two, I can hardly wait till your wedding!

I like to call this image: "No Line on the Horizon", I'm so darn creative!

We found these chairs in Matt's mom's yard... Don't you just love them?  I think you guys should bring these to your wedding!

In case you're wondering why I didn't touch up Matt's scar, it's because he didn't ask!  And he actually told me he doesn't mind it.  Why fix what isn't broken?

    I just LOVE this shot!

Here, Matt is trying to be all GQ, just like Amanda!

Ahhh, what a great day that was!

    Congratulations guys!!!

    It's all in the speeches.

It really is!!!  As much as a wedding is about the love between two people, their vows, their personal expressions in the form of their decor, choice of gown, music, etc... it all ends up in the speeches...

You can tell people's personalities from the speeches.

You can tell what kind of childhood they had, from the speeches.

You can tell how close they are to their families, from the speeches...

And you can also tell how incredibly sappy the photographer is, from the speeches.  Better yet, from my reaction to the speeches.  Let's face it: I'm a wedding junkie!  I love speeches!  I love getting to know the couples that I love so dearly through the speeches...

Yes, there's the odd roast and there's always an MC that makes the speeches about himself, but not this time.  This time I was so incredibly moved and reassured that I'm a good judge of character...

Jolene and Ryan are amazing people.  Jolene is pure PURE kindness (not to mention BEAUTY!!!), and Ryan is the cutest tallest teddy bear you've ever met (and he's sooooo in love with Jolene, it's crazy)!  They complement each other so well!  And their families are amazing to boot!

So, in honour of great wedding speeches, I will start this post with one of my favorite things about receptions: The Reactions to the speeches.

Here's Jolene and Ryan laughing at something that Kevin (Ryan's brother) said:

And then two of my personal favorites.  The first one is Lynn's (Jolene's mom) reaction to something the couple said during their speech and the second is Donna (Ryan's mom).  Seriously, doesn't it make you want to jump into this story and hear exactly what was said?  What I love the most about these shots is that you can almost see their tears too... Ah, I love weddings...

    Wow, I'm so sappy!!!

Now, back to the original order of things.

Jolene and Ryan live in Thunder Bay, ON, where they met when she moved there for a job in the local hospital.  They were set up on a blind date, fell in love just couldn't stay away from each other!!!

Along came sweet little Ceara, and their lives have never been the same!  Love, laughter, many trials, and much much joy followed, which brings us to this day: Their Wedding Day!

From the smallest details, everything was absolutely perfect!

As we arrived, Douglas was there washing the car so that he could drive Jolene to St Charles Country Club, a whole block away!  That's dedication!

Jolene was wearing her grandma's bracelet. There's a bingo card charm on it. Jolene told me that her grandma used to take her to bingo with her when she was little. Isn't that so precious?

As soon as I walked into Lynn's house, I knew I would be photographing this chaise that was Lynn's inheritance from one of her aunts... So gorgeous!

The next few images are of Ryan and Jolene's first look... They chose to see each other beforehand and their reward was a WHOLE HOUR just by themselves on their wedding day... Oh, and I was there too!

I just love the way they're looking at each other...

Lucky for Jolene and not so lucky for the rest of Manitoba, but the Apple Blossoms were still in bloom in June.

I love Jolene's laugh... so it wasn't "golf course" appropriate, but oh well, we had fun!

Jolene's dress was something right out of a movie!

One of Douglas' friends from the club brought in this beauty for a prop!

I think I want a BIG ONE of these on my wall... don't you? Ryan is soooo much taller than Jolene (and everyone else I know...) so I wanted to accentuate that in this image. Why downplay something so cool?

The guys were so much fun, and they listened to everything I suggested and even played "air golf" on the course for me!

    Left to Right, Ryan's boys:

Derren, Ryan, Kevin and Ryan #2 (I called him short Ryan)...

The ladies were also awesome, never once complaining about the frigid weather and all that walking in heels!  Left to Right: Ceara, Jolene, Mel, Brianne and Jess.

This little girl is soooo photogenic it hurts!  You just CAN'T take a bad picture of her!

The shot on the right is a detail of the cake which was made by High Tea Bakery!  It was beautiful AND incredibly tasty!

Here's some more images... no more talking!

My assistant Mirek got this cute shot of Ceara!!  And many more cute shots!  Thank you Mirek

     Now some details:

This chandelier was hanging at Jolene's parents' (Doug and Lynn's) house... The flower is what Ceara would take down the aisle... Don't you just love that chandelier?

Jolene had these little boxes set up for Ceara's friends who were invited to the wedding!  Such attention to detail!

Ryan and Jolene both like skiing, so for their "guestbook" they had an old pair of skis that the guests signed as they walked in.  These skis will hang out in the barn (once Ryan is done renovating it!)

Boys like toys.  So here's another prop!

And Dennis did this when he was "posing" with Ryan.  I told him it would end up on the internet... I wonder if he believed me?

I love the image on the right because Ceara was hanging on to mommy during the ceremony... sweetest thing!

Hey Ryan, what exactly were you doing here?  "Yeah, that's right! I got her now!!!  She's all mine!"  I love it!

Now, onto my favorite shots!  The dance!  Ahhhh, did I tell you I love weddings?

    Here's proof!

    I love this cake-cutting shot!

And these guests were having a tonne of fun!

Ok, here's the slideshow!  To download your own high res copy of this slideshow to watch on your tv, go here!

Jolene and Ryan,  thank you for letting me be a part of this great amazing day!

Thank you Jolene for reading my blog last year and falling in love with my work, like I fell in love with you and your family!

I hope that I can continue to be a part of your lives for years to come!

When Monika and Mike hired me last year to do their upcoming August wedding, I was soooo thrilled!  Not only for the obvious reasons, like "they're gorgeous" and we're distant cousins, their wedding sounds soooo interesting, but also because they're going as green as possible with their wedding preparations!

If you follow (stalk) my blog, then you've already met them... Here they are planing their own flowers (yes!!!), and here's their engagement session...

Now, here's the next thing that they're doing (or should I say, Monika is doing...).  She's making all of the centerpiece pottery pieces herself!!!  Isn't that amazing?

She emailed me the other day to tell me that she would be planting some of the veggies (that we'll be eating at the Reception - YUM!) but first she had to go to the pottery studio and finish making her pots!  Hulloooo!!!  Can I photograph that? was my answer!

So there I went and am I ever glad I did!  If only I were crafty enough (or at all!), this is definitely something I would be into!

Thank you Moni and Mike for letting me be a part of this incredibly organic process!  Here are some of the many shots I took... for you to enjoy!

Kesia is my little cousin from Brazil, who is living with us while she goes to school to learn English... My favorite uncle, Daniel, sent her ALLLL the way up here and entrusted me with caring for her...

And what do I do?  I put her in a short little dress and heels and make her pose! Ai Ai Ai! He would say...

But I got news for you... there's much more to come yet (no, guys, sorry, but I'm not doing THOSE kinds of photoshoots with her...)

Here's a few shots for you to enjoy and for her to share with everyone back home (take THAT Mr Ex-Boyfriend! Ha!)

    _______________________________

A good friend of mine always tells me: "Be intentional in all you do."  He says that everything looks better when done intentionally.

My dear beautiful bride, Mara, knows that.

From the details in her decorations, to the colours of the dresses, and the words in her ceremony, she is that: intentional.

No detail was missed, no words were minced, and no smiles missed when she looked at Ryan.  She might have felt self conscious of the camera, but when she looked at him, she was lovingly intentional...

And what a glorious day it was!  The Sun showed up and the Wind was glorious!  This is the part where I apologize profusely for being so in love with windy days and gorgeous couples walking about with veils tossed in the wind and carefree smiles... (I'm such a poet!!!)   The wind was no match for these two's disposition!  And I loved that we went for a walk in the woods by your house, Mara and Ryan, where you guys take Sugar (their puppy) for a walk all the time!  These are some great memories indeed!

Ok, enough chit-chat! Here's the images!  Be sure to watch the video at the end of this post.

I loved Mara's shoes!  She made it through the whole day with them on! That's style!  And the veil! Oooooh, the veil!!!

Mara were her grandmother's green ring from Honk  Kong, for her "something borrowed".  I love that ring!

One of my favorite moments of the day is the very first look... When the couple agrees to have their pictures taken before the ceremony, I want to make sure that I see their "first look" at each other...  They get a bonus when deciding that because they get time alone, which they wouldn't have otherwise...

For their time alone we went to the "forest" right by their house.  The aspens were still quite bare, but they provided a little shelter from the wind and helped to create great memories...

When I was editing these images, my cousin said that this one below was her favorite.  She called it the "When Harry Met Sally" shot... Relaxed and slightly windy... And no kissing on this one.. ;)

The boys didn't have their hairdo's to worry about, so we stayed outside quite a bit...

    Here she is again, stunning!

And I really hope that I can take credit for this contagious laugh, but I have a feeling it must have been something Keith said... He was so funny!  I didn't know an accountant could be so darn funny! ;)

Did I mention to you that I LOVED Mara's veil?

These two are some of my absolute favorite shots of you, Mara!!

    Here's that great laugh again!

The girls were a lot of fun too, and they had a lot of great ideas, like this one by the lamppost...

We headed back to The Gates, where the ceremony and reception were to happen, and headed upstairs for the Bedeck-en.   In an impromptu-intentional moment, Mara asked one of her best-friends, Naomi to read the Ketubah for all of us.  Naomi read the Hebrew and then English parts and we all teared-up!  So gorgeous!

Here's the details of this very classy wedding!

    Venue: The Gates on Roblin

    Flowers: Floral Elements

Cake: The very decadent and amazingly talented Doug from Chocolate Zen

    Gown: Alfred Sung

    Hair: Mandy Pfeffer

     And here's the video!

And for all of you that made it through this post, here's a little bonus image, that I absolutely adore!

Thank you Mara and Ryan for picking me!!!  I hope I did justice to the marvelous event that was your wedding... I loved the words in your ceremony and all of the very beautiful traditions that you both incorporated in it.  May your life be filled with joy and blessings in everything that you do!

(And ooooh, have a wonderful time in Santorini! Sorry that I can't come with you this time, but maybe next time???  )

I met her when she was eight years old and I think I tried to cut her hair... And apparently I got impatient with her when I tried to paint her nails, but she wouldn't sit still...

But somehow, when it came time to say "I do", she still picked me!  Maybe her mom gave her no choice or maybe she really loves me!  (of course she does!)

Vivian's family moved here from Brazil a month before our family in 1989, and we all became friends very quickly, living in the same apartment complex and having a million relatives in common.  She was always the quiet, but sweet one, and her sister, Fabi, the very much NOT QUIET type, but also sweet...

It's amazing to have had the privilege of watching you grow up, Vivian, into this amazing woman that you are.  Just look at you!

Don't be fooled by the next shot, I wasn't the one who did up Vivian's dress.  Her mom did it... and she was very good at it.  I just finished it up, after all, I've done a few weddings here and there, so I knew exactly what to do!

When Vivian was all dressed, her Opa, who came in from Brazil just for the wedding, walked in and hugged her.  He was very emotional to see his little granddaughter getting married, and he gave up on the fight to hold back his tears. (and at that point, so did I... thank God for autofocus...)

Vivian's flowers were done by the ever talented Julie from Whyte Ridge Academy florist.  She never ceases to amaze me... I love how Vivian looks in this shot... she looks like the little girl I remember from years ago...

Stunning bride and her little pooch, Casey, who got a special haircut just for the occasion...

Vivian's Oma Derksen knit her a special shawl for the day, so she wouldn't be cold... I thought it was the sweetest thing.  And I loved how the textures looked with her ring lying in it.

Vivian and Anthony met ahead of time to do some relaxed portraits and have some time alone.  It looks like they enjoyed it too!  Anthony is a very handsome man, who was in absolute awe of his gorgeous bride...

Vivian told me she loved "the tunnel" in the Exchange!  Hey, I'm always happy to make my couples happy!

I know the next shot is blurry... I love how that looks in this case, though... and I love that Vivian has her eyes closed too...

Some more portraits of the two love-birds...

    Vivian and her girls...

    Anthony and the boys...

When we were doing family pictures, Dave (Anthony's dad, on the left) told me how he loves cowboy boots (mine) and since he's a country man, saw nothing wrong with a bride wearing cowboy boots... Well, then!  Your wish is my command, sir!  Here's Vivian with her dads...

Later, at the Reception... Here's flower girl, Avery, stealing the show...

    The first dance...

    Dancing with her dad...

Thank you Vivian and Anthony, Tante Rosi and Reinaldo, Delight and Dave for letting me be a part of this exciting time!  All the best to all of you!

Now, here's a little something for all of you who made it through this post... My mom and dad tore up the dance floor!  Even after almost 40 years, eh?  That's love...

If you keep up with Boge culture, you must know that the tie was broken when baby Jackson came into the world last year... 6 boys and 5 girls all under the age of 9...

But, the tie is on again!  Katyiana Ginette Boge (Jamie and Ghislaine's baby) came into the world just over a week ago and is cute as a button!  I can't believe how much she's grown already in just a few days!  I'm specially excited because I get to photograph this little cutie - and I get to pass on the millions of pink clothes to her and her big sister Anastasia! Yay for the girls.

We always wonder who will be the next to break the tie and I can tell you right now it won't be me... Krista,  Lori and Ghislaine (again) are up for it this time!

Enough "Boge Talk"! Time for some pictures!

I was sitting there visiting with Ghislaine and Mom and then all of a sudden, Sebastien (we call him Sea-bass) runs into his bedroom and grabs his pillow, which is a signal to his mom that he wants to hold baby K!

He is just in awe of her...

Then all of a sudden, he just starts watching TV and holding her, like it's no big deal, he's just doing his job.  Just like his dad!!!

Then we try to get Anastasia in the picture and she just isn't quite interested at first...

But then, all of a sudden, she is ok with it for about 2 seconds, so I have to work fast!

Then I get this little sweetie pie all to myself...

Naked Newborns are always a good subject...  And naked babies in their mommy's arms... oh so sweet...

It's always good to finish with babies in the makeup case, isn't it?

Thank you for letting me come over, guys!  Time to update the family picture, quick, before the next one comes!

    Love, Tante Patty!
